PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Lizard Squad Hacking News: Christmas Outages Due to Hackers

Two major online video gaming networks, Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network, have suffered connection outages on Christmas Day and a hacking group is claiming to be the reason why.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Xbox Live and PSN went down on Wednesday evening and continued to give problems to their respective gamers on Thursday.

"We are aware that some users are experiencing difficulty logging into the PSN," a message on Sony's support site read. "We will update this article with any changes that occur in regards to this issue. Thank you for your patience."

Microsoft also reached out to their subscribers to acknowledge the issues by saying:

"Having a tough time signing in? Don't worry! We're working to fix this right away!"

Apparently, a hacking group called Lizard Squad has laid claim on the holiday "hacktivity." TechCrunch.com reported that the group has been threatening to cause service interruptions on the said networks for weeks already.

The "hacktivists" even went to their social media to post the message that says:

"10,000 [retweets] and we will stop smacking #Xbox and #PSN offline."

TC added that the Lizard Squad was also behind the PlayStation Network and Blizzard outages which occurred back in August.

The latest update on the issue was reported by Deadline.com. The publication cited the announcement from Sony in their Twitter account "acknowledging that the PlayStation Network continues to be offline and that it has 'no ETA' for when the service will return to operation."

The site went on to say that the attacks "have been renewed in the past two hours" on Microsoft's Xbox Live network.
