For console players subscribed to different gaming services, a new month means a new set of games to play. September is no different, with PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live with Gold subscribers highly anticipating top caliber games to get their hands on.

Xbox Live with Gold v. PlayStation Plus

If numbers alone are the benchmark, PlayStation Plus easily wins here as Sony's subscription service offers six games monthly, two more than Xbox Live with Gold's four. However, both services traditionally offer two games per platform (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita for PlayStation Plus, and Xbox One and Xbox 360 for Xbox Live with Gold).

Sony's Instant Game Collection service fares well against Microsoft's Games with Gold offering, with both delivering games of high standards to subscribed users. Now that September is fast-approaching, the game lineup will now be refreshed, and we'll take a closer look at both confirmed and rumored games coming to these platforms.

Headliners: Take Down a City, Save a World

Ubisoft's "Watch Dogs" is expected to headline the PlayStation 4 lineup. The AAA title game offers an open-world free to roam campaign wherein the player must take down the fictional cutting-edge operating system of Chicago.

On the other hand, the Xbox One roster will be bannered by "Earthlock: Festival of Magic." The turned-based RPG focuses on an anomaly in a dystopian world. The planet Umbra has to be saved by the player as it stopped spinning, sparking the plot of the game.

Installments: Shooters and Assassins

"Killzone Shadow Fall," developed by Guerrilla Games, follows the remaining survivors of an uninhabitable planet shooting adversaries in order to continue living. This PlayStation 4 release will be the sixth installment of the "Killzone" franchise.

"Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China" is a platform action-adventure game from the renowned franchise. The game follows the female protagonist Shao Jun as she exacts revenge for the fallen Chinese brotherhood. The Xbox One game is the first installment of the "Assassin's Creed Chronicles" franchise.

Driving Delight

The PlayStation 3 will parade Ubisoft's "Driver: San Francisco," while the Xbox 360 unveils "Forza Horizon" from Playground Games. The PlayStation game is an action-adventure racing game that follows a high-speed pursuit of the protagonist and his companion. The Xbox game, on the other hand, is a simpler open road street racing game that incorporates various gameplay aspects from previous "Forza Motorsport" titles.

Lego, Platform, and Puzzle Games

The PS Vita would be receiving three games this month. First of which is "Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham," a humorous game that accompanies the Lego reincarnation of various characters as they traverse various worlds and missions. Indie game "Axiom Verge" is a metroidvania-genre game that follows a scientist as he explores a high-tech world. "Daxter" features a platform format full of puzzles and free-running, and is part of the "Jak and Daxter" video game series.

The last Xbox 360 game is "Mirror's Edge," published by EA. The action-adventure game follows the protagonist, Faith, as she serves as a courier in transmitting messages while evading the government in the futuristic dystopian world. The game is also previously available on Xbox One.
