The late night show appearances have surprised some, as Obama is the first president to appear on such shows during his term, although his wife Michelle Obama has appeared on the Jimmy Fallon Show before.

The question then is what Obama's motive are by making the unusual late-night appearances? According to USA Today, such appearances could help Obama target a younger audience.

"Late Night With Jimmy Fallon airs at 12:35 p.m. ET, and draws a large number of young viewers -- a voting demographic the president will try to reach with a trip next week," the news site reported.

Further focusing his campaign on America's youth, Obama has made a series of appearance in college towns and at college universities.

The president's assistant, Dan Pfeiffer has suggested that Obama's Tuesday night talk will focus on student loans.

"Pres Obama will appear on @jimmyfallon on Tuesday at UNC Chapel Hill to talk abt preventing interests rates from doubling on student loans," Pfeiffer wrote.

Obama also made a late show appearance in 2009 on "The Tonight Show." Dave Mathews is set to appear, following Fallon's talk with the president.
