A Reddit user has been reported to the FBI after using a meme to confess to the murder of his sister's abusive boyfriend.
A Reddit user writing under the name "Naratto" was reported to the FBI after making a post late Saturday night confessing to the murder of his sisters boyfriend. The user used a popular "confession bear" meme to write: "My sister had an abusive meth addict boyfriend. I killed him with his own drugs while he was unconscious and they ruled it as an overdose." The post was made in a thread titled "Finally have the guts to say it" which is hosted by AdviceAnimals- it has over 2 million users.
Over 3,000 users responded to Naratto's post, some even defending the user, although others questioned whether or not the crime had actually occurred. The meme with the "confession bear" is typically reserved for more trivial confessions. The user initially responded to the users, saying only parts of the confession were true.
"I posted this wondering what would happen, there is SOME truth behind it, but I'm not saying what was true and what wasn't. If I had a dollar for every time someone took me seriously on the internet, I would be able to retire from today alone. I'm sorry to anyone that I've offended to the point of ruining their lives," Naratto wrote. 'If you want to catch a murder, get out of your house, put on some tight and go fight crime. I'm quite done with reddit tonight. Back to the shadows of lurking, the world isn't quite ready for me.'
In response Reddit users began to post Naratto's personal information, including the user's name, birth date, and place of employment- those posts have since been deleted. But in response Naratto insisted his initial confession was only a "joke" and accused other users of being "rude" for digging up personal information. While the case is still under investigation, it appears that Naratto had a military background.
