Roma Downey Hopes 'Son of God' and 'The Bible' Become Staple Easter Season Films

Actress and producer Roma Downey hopes that "The Bible" mini-series and the film "Son of God" that she produced along with her husband, Mark Burnett, will become favorite films for Christians during the Easter season, just as "The Ten Commandments" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told" are staple annual films.

"People are in that head-space and in that heart-space. It's that time of the year where people are much more reflective and much more open to connecting with their faith," said Downey, according to USA Today. "People come together with their families to celebrate Easter. What better way to celebrate than to spend a few hours going on the journey of Christ's life."

The 1956 film "The Ten Commandments" and the 1965 movie "The Greatest Story Ever Told" are "fantastic viewings," she said, "but they are dated."

"For this generation of moviegoers, this is an opportunity to breathe fresh visual life into the story of Jesus," Downey added.

Downey told The Christian Post last week that she and her husband are thrilled that so many people have seen "Son of God" and so many lives have been changed.

"This has been a journey of love for my husband and I – we poured everything into the show and the movie. And to see them so well-received has been gratifying," she said.

Downey also talked about their production company, Lightworkers Media.

"Our intention has always been instead of cursing the darkness, we would rather light a candle and through our work to shine the light of hope and faith. It was out of that that our intention was set to create 'The Bible' series, which of course, was a phenomenal hit at Easter in 2013 and then 'Son of God,' which launched to huge success this spring. And out of that we are now creating a new series for NBC called 'A.D.' which is set to air in the fall of 2015," she told The Christian Post.
