Makers of the hottest smartphones seem to be cashing in on upgraded versions of the originals with devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and Motorola Droid Razr Maxx.

The latest of these being the Droid Razr Maxx which is an upgraded version of the Droid Razr smartphone from Verizon that features a more powerful battery. AT&T released a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S2 known as the Skyrocket that is part of its 4G LTE network. It seems that the two companies have strategically placed these devices against each other. But which one is worth purchasing?

The Droid Razr Maxx packs a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display with a dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 processor with TI OMAP 4430 chipset. It also runs on Android 2.3.5, Gingerbread OS with an Ice Cream Sandwich update sure to come in the near future. Its camera's ability to capture video in 1080p is nothing to over look either.

The most impressive feature on the Maxx is its Li-lon 3300 mAh battery that provides owners with 21 hours of talk time and 368 hours of standby time. It not quite the next-gen Razr, but it does pack a significant upgrade.

The Skyrocket on the other hand brings 4G LTE connectivity to one of the most popular Android phones on the market. It packs a dual-core 1.5GHz processor slightly trumping the Razr. It also includes a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, 1 GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory and an 8-megapixel camera that can capture video in 1080p HD as well.

Both devices seem to be quite impressive. However the Skyrocket trumps the Razr Maxx in processing speed, display size and price with AT&T offering it for $199.99 with a new contract. The Razr Maxx retails at $299.99 on Verizon with a new contract. If customers are looking for the best smartphone battery life to date, that the Maxx might be a better buy.
