Samsung Gear VR Release Date: Headset to Cost Around $200, Coming in December

Samsung's newly-launched virtual reality headset, the Samsung Gear VR, will be released next month. The Gear VR Innovator Edition is said to retail at $200 and is slated to arrive in the U.S. region early next month.

"It will come in two versions: for $249, you'll get the headset bundled with a Bluetooth gamepad, and for $199, you'll get only the headset," Oculus VR announced on their website.

However, for those who still don't have the Galaxy Note 4, the price could double as they have yet to spend another $400 to $500 to purchase the smartphone.

"The Innovator Edition, much like the Oculus Rift Development Kit, provides developers and enthusiasts everything they need to build and experiment with the platform before the hardware and software are ready for consumers," they continued. "There are numerous made-for-VR apps that will ship for Gear VR over the next few months."

For starters, the device has a slot to house the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which in turn will act as the headset's display screen.

Along with the VR's adjustable lenses, the Samsung phablet's accelerometer and gyrometer will track the user's head movement to further give a much deeper, more real, "reality" impression.

Oculus, the virtual reality company behind the Samsung Gear VR, was bought by Facebook over the summer in a $2 billion deal.

The Gear VR project and the partnership with Samsung were first announced in September, Time reported.

The tech firm also revealed that on this coming Wednesday, users can download the oculus Mobile SDK. This software system will enable developers to create apps, games, and other essential functions for the upcoming Gear VR.
