Sandra Fluke Running for Congress? Attorney Officially Files for Candidacy

Sandra Fluke, who became a household name after being called a "slut" by Rush Limbaugh, has officially filed the paperwork necessary to run for California Representative Henry Waxman's seat in Congress. Fluke has not announced her campaign but filing the paperwork makes her eligible to be on the official ballot.

Fluke became famous when she was called to testify about birth control being covered under the Affordable Care Act in 2012. The Republican chairman Darrell Issa refused to allow Fluke to speak to the panel gathered, but the Democrats allowed her to speak to them instead. She argued that taking birth control out of the Affordable Care Act was unfair to women.

Limbaugh called her a "slut" on his radio show in February 2012, inadvertently launching her into a higher political and public sphere. Since then, she has continued speaking about women's rights and last month said she was "strongly considering" running for Waxman's seat and was "flattered" to be discussed as a potential candidate.

"I'm flattered that I'm being discussed as a potential candidate. A number of folks I respect very deeply have reached out today and encouraged me to run," Fluke told KPCC. "I am strongly considering running."

If, in fact, Fluke decides to run, she will have to battle Wendy Greuel and State Senator Ted Liee, as well as Marianne Williamson for the Democratic nomination.

Waxman is leaving office after serving more than 40 years in the United States Congress. There has been a great deal of interest in his seat from both sides of the aisle. California is largely a Democratic state, meaning that it is more likely than not that Waxman's seat will go to a Democratic candidate. OF course, that remains to be seen, especially given the vast number of candidates seeking the official Democratic nomination from the party.

Fluke currently works as an attorney in the state of California.
