"The Avengers" features "Earth's mightiest heroes," to use Marvel's wording - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk.

Next to Johansson, the movie stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner. Chris Evans also played Captain America in the comic book-based film.

When an unexpected enemy threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury (Jackson), director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., needs to assemble a team of heroes who can save the world.

The movie is based on the popular Marvel comic book series of the same name, first published in 1963.

Whedon directed such cult TV series as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," and, more recently, "Dollhouse."

Johansson's character, Natasha Romanova, alias the Black Widow is "one of the world's greatest spies and master of disguise," and "the legendary scarlet-haired" heroine, according to Marvel's website. She is a member of the Black Widow Program, a team of elite female sleeper agents.

Romanova was separated from her parents as a child and raised by a Soviet soldier. She was trained by the Soviet intelligence agents to become a killing machine.

The actress played the same part in the film "Iron Man 2."

Johansson was busy working on filming "The Avengers" when a scandal broke out after a hacker broke into her phone and stole her nude photos that were subsequently published on the Internet. The FBI is still investigating the case, which also touched some other celebrities, in search for the hackers.
