'Sherlock' Christmas Special News, Update: [Watch] The Latest Trailer For the Victorian-Era Special Released

The highly-acclaimed and popular TV series from BBC, "Sherlock," will temporarily leave the modern, fast-paced London setting for a dark and enigmatic Victorian era when it returns to the small screen this December.

To further amp up the excitement, the network released the new trailer for the "Sherlock" Christmas Special episode. The video once again offers the fans a glimpse of the show's beloved characters, Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his trusty sidekick, John Watson, portrayed by Martin Freeman.

The rather lengthy clip shows the pair walking down an old England filled with horse-drawn buggies, ladies wearing corsets, men in their suits and fedora hats, and most interestingly, a Dr. Watson with a mustache.

This year's special segment has yet to be given an official title but it is assumed that the plot will be taken directly from the classic collection written by the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Other reports, however, indicated that the new adventure was born straight from the minds of the brilliant creators of the show, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

Picking up details from the video, a woman can be seen getting mad at Sherlock telling him "You promised to keep him safe!" It appears that the sleuth may have failed to successfully carry out his mission this time.

Dark and bleak scenes followed after with Holmes talking this time with Watson.

"We all have a past, Watson. Ghosts – they're the shadows that define our every sunny day."

Apparently, something big and something huge in scale is also about to happen in this episode.

"Every war has suicide missions, and make no mistake: this is war," Holmes said. For what it is, it remains to be seen.

For the meantime, Moffat had previously confirmed that the upcoming special will be independent from the equally anticipated three-parter fourth season of the show.
