Diogo Morgado, the actor who plays Jesus in the recently-released "Son of God" movie, will reportedly play a more devilish character in his upcoming CW television series, "The Messengers."

Sources close to the new series' production team have told multiple media outlets that Morgado will be playing a more sinister character in the upcoming series. TMZ claims the Brazilian-born actor was "cast as the devil" in the new show, while The Daily Mail reports Morgado will play "a character from hell."

As The Hollywood Reporter described last week, Morgado will reportedly play the role of "The Man," a mysterious character who appears on earth as a selected group of humans scramble to save the world from an impending apocalypse. Morgado's character will first appear in the new sci-fi drama as "naked and burned in the desert, [setting] out on a mission to provide some answers about the strange events."

TMZ also reports that the CW network is keeping details of Morgado's new role top secret, as reportedly those behind the recently-released "Son of God" movie fear news of Morgado's new devilish role will stir outrage among Christian moviegoers and cause ticket sales to plummet.

The "Son of God" movie, produced by husband-and-wife team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, has maintained strong box office numbers since it was released in the beginning of March, taking in $26.5 million during its opening weekend. The film uses footage and deleted scenes from the highly-acclaimed History Channel miniseries "The Bible."

Morgado, with his handsome features and tall stature, has gained the nickname of "Hot Jesus" for his role in both "The Bible" and "Son of God." The actor, however, has kept a humble and serious attitude about his role, saying in multiple interviews that he understands the responsibility he carries by playing Jesus on the big screen.

The 34-year-old actor previously told TODAY that when he first found out he had landed the role, he was "in shock; I was in panic because I knew the responsibility. I mean, I went to Jerusalem and while I was there, I felt on my own the importance of the story. [It's] so alive."

Morgado also indicated his desire to be taken seriously as an actor, saying while he takes the nickname "Hot Jesus" as "a compliment obviously," he's still "waiting for the good stuff. And the good stuff for me is if someone just nabbed me on the shoulder and said, 'Look, you did a pretty good job.'"

No announcement has been made about when the pilot for "The Messengers" will be released.
