Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary launched a comprehensive plan recently to aid students from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and to provide support for victims of the devastation by Hurricane Katrina.

SEBTS President Daniel Akin on Sept. 7 announced Operation G.R.A.C.E., a plan involving SEBTS students, faculty, and staff in aiding those in the Gulf Coast region.

Operation G.R.A.C.E. incorporates five major components. The newly launched website, www.sebts.edu/OperationGrace, details each component:

“G” stands for giving and going.
SEBTS will collect donations and sponsor trips to the Gulf Coast region to help in outreach and relief efforts. Four trips have been organized for Oct. 1-8, Dec. 17-22, Jan. 7-14, and Mar. 4-11.

“R” is for receiving and restoring.
Like many of the Baptist seminaries and colleges throughout the nation, SEBTS will aid in efforts to get NOBTS students back in school as soon as possible by accepting NOBTS students for the fall semester. Students will not be required to pay tuition for the semester and any credits earned will be transferable to NOBTS. Students must contact the office by October 10.

“A” is for aiding and assisting.
SEBTS is partnering with First Baptist North Mobile, Ala., and several churches in the Wake Forest and Research Triangle area to provide assistance in relief efforts.

“C” stands for caring and comforting.
Operation G.R.A.C.E. encourages prayer, donations, and outreach to show love to the many victims of the hurricane. Prayer for the relief efforts and the victims, monetary donations, and participation in the relief trips are all ways students, faculty, and staff may help out.

“E” stands for evangelizing and encouraging.
In keeping with the central mission of SEBTS to spread the Gospel of Christ, students, faculty, and staff are invited to provide physical and spiritual support to those in the Gulf Coast region and to share the message of the Gospel with those in need.

Said President Akin, “Southeastern Seminary is committed to Operation G.R.A.C.E. for the long haul. We intend to mobilize our students and lend our aid as long as it takes. We recognize that this is going to be a year, or longer, effort.

“We hope to involve all of our students, including their children. They will understand the love of Christ in a time of need. We want to mobilize the entire Southeastern community. This will give them a chance not only to do something immediately but in the future as well.”
