Goldsmith got his start composing for sci-fi and horror films which included "Laserblast" and "The Man With Two Brains." His niche however, quickly developed through television series. Goldsmith became the main composer on "Stargate," scoring more than 350 episodes. He also composed the main title and score for "Stargate Atlantis."

One of six children of the famous composer Jerry Goldsmith, Joel had a successful career. During his career Goldsmith collaborated with both his father and Neal Acree, who also worked on "Stargate."

"I'm utterly heartbroken at the loss of my dear friend and mentor Joel Goldsmith," Acree said in a statement after his friend's passing. "He was like a second father to me and I feel like I owe much of my career to the opportunities he gave me including my first feature film and first experience scoring television. His influence on my life, both personally and musically, will stay with me always."

Goldsmith had suffered from cancer, according to Oregon Music News, which suggested that his death had come after a long battle with the disease.
