Character Actor

Leto has been well-Documented as being a character actor. This can be seen in his Academy Award-winning part in "Dallas Buyers Club" when he played a transgender woman named Rayon. For the role, Leto lost 30 pounds, shaved his eyebrows and waxed his entire body.

For his role as Joker on "Suicide Squad," many people on the set have said that Leto stayed in character the entire shoot -- even off cam -- which allowed him to reach greater depths while playing the iconic villain.

The New Joker Look

When the first screen shots of the Joker for the "Suicide Squad" film were revealed, the photos showed a gritter, more outlandish Joker.

Fans are accustomed to seeing Joker with his Pale white skin, purple suit and green hair. Even though Leto's version of the Joker still has green hair and white skin, he now sports a collection of tattoos that must have some kind of symbolic meaning.

One of the biggest differences from the previous incarnations of the character is that Leto's version has several of his front teeth missing, and in their place, are metal implants. It is yet unknown if these fake teeth are there for a reason or just to make the character look more menacing, but it is clearly a change from what has been seen in the past.

Joker's Iconic Laugh

What would the Joker be without his iconic maniacal laughter? Every actor who has played the Joker has given his own take on the laugh. The 1960's Joker, Cesar Romero, had a more playful whimsical laugh while the 1990's Joker, Jack Nicholson, had a dark psychotic tone to it.

Leto's take on the Joker laugh has a maniacal undertone to it. It seems that the character is using the laugh to hurt you, not physically but mentally.

Fans will have to wait until Aug. 5 to see what else Leto will bring to the table when "Suicide Squad" premieres.
