Super Smash Bros Creator Gives Up Directorship of Franchise, Says He Won't Get Involved in Future Sequels

Smash Bros creator and director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that if the fighting game franchise continues, he won't be involved with it anymore.

In his latest interview with Game Informer, Sakurai explained that although there's a possibility of more Smash Bros. games sequels in the future, these titles would probably be developed without his name credited on it.

"I can't positively declare there won't be [another Smash Bros. game]," Sakurai said. "With both Melee and Brawl, I made those games with the thought that there wouldn't be any more sequels. Thus, I really can't deny the chance for another."

"However, as for myself, I don't think there will be," he declared.

The 44-year-old Japanese game creator meanwhile revealed that the new Super Smash Bros on Wii U – and for 3DS – were in itself already a "massive undertaking" and that any sequel would only mean to require equal, if not, much greater effort.

"In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago," he explained. "And yet, if we cut the number of fighters or modes in a future game, I'm sure there would be complaints."

Sakurai, however, didn't rule out the possibility that someone would take over the directorship of the franchise for him. But then again, he implied that it wouldn't be that easy to handle.

"You could say that all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future," he said.

"That may seem like it contradicts my personal desire to keep giving gamers as much as I can, but I don't see any easy answer for it. And yet, despite that, I also have trouble picturing someone else taking my place and providing all this value-added content without me," Sakurai concluded.

"Super Smash Bros" for Wii U and 3Ds is one of 2014's best game titles, according to IGN.
