'Supergirl' Season 2 News and Cast Updates: Superman and Cat Grant Details Discussed; New Character Revealed

Supergirl Executive Producer Reveals New Details about Superman, Cat Grant, and a New Character.

With a somewhat predictable move to transfer to The CW, the production of Supergirl's 2nd Season is shaken up with cast shuffles and new additions.

Network Move

Supergirl's first season aired in CBS, but ratings declined after its stellar pilot. The network was reported to cut spending for the show, which urged the production to move to The CW. This move makes sense to fans as other DC superhero TV shows Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow are aired in the network, even with a planned four-way crossover among the shows. The new season premieres on October 10.

Superman Details

The girl of steel's insanely famous cousin will be returning to the small screen, to be played by Teen Wolf alum Taylor Hoechlin. He is set to appear in the second season's debut episode. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said that his rendition would be a very separate persona from the Henry Cavill rendition in the DC Cinematic Universe.

Kreisberg said that Hoechlin's role would be more of a savvy cousin of Supergirl, having spent longer time being a superhero than she has. He will also be seen somewhat mentoring Kara Danvers, the alter ego of Supergirl, in regards to crime-fighting and tackling other life problems. Sticking to a more comic book traditional characterization, Hoechlin will also manifest Clark Kent's journalistic skills when dealing with people and juicing them for information.

As for inspiration of the character, Kreisberg said that the show's Superman version would be loosely based on an amalgamation of his previous portrayals. In the mix are the classic Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve, the Superman animated series version, the Lois and Clark show of the 90's, the Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves, and the Super Friends animated show.

Less Cat Grant?

With Supergirl's move from CBS to The CW comes the need to move the production location from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Canada. This created some problems with the cast, with Calista Flockhart being one of the most prominent stars to take a blow.

Calista Flockhart's character, Cat Grant, is Kara Danvers' boss in CatCo, a media company that Grant owns. Their rocky relationship at first turned into somewhat of a mother-daughter type as the show progressed. However, due to production changes, fans will be seeing less of Cat Grant in the 2nd season.

Flockhart is set to appear in the first two episodes of the show. As for future appearances, Kreisberg is still unaware if negotiations are set in place. Her character's void will be filled by newcomer Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr to be the new editor-in-chief of Catco.

Arrival of Mon-El

A new season means new characters for the show. New friends, good guys, and villains have been cast for the second season, with the latest being Mon-El to be played by Chris Wood. Closely related to Supergirl and her cousin's species, Mon-El lands on Earth almost a decade after Kara Danvers (the cliffhanger scene from Season 1) with similar abilities. He will then be Kara's mentee this time around as he adapts to a new world, and for Supergirl to fulfill her original role to protect Clark Kent in the place of Mon-El.
