Tampa Bay Buccaneers News: Rookie QB Winston Ties League Rookie Record for TD Passes

Quarterback Jameis Winston is making quite an impression in Tampa lately, and he was in the spotlight once again during the Buccaneers' 45-17 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles by tying the NFL record for passing touchdowns in a game by a rookie.

The historic Sunday afternoon game saw Winston connecting with five receivers, all of which resulted to points. ESPN reported that the only other rookie QBs to have done the same thing were Ray Buivid of the Bears in 1937 and Matthew Stafford of the Lions in 2009.

Talking to reporters after the game, Winston said that every game he plays is something he considers as special. "Every day I step on the field, I think it's going to be a special day. We took control of the line of scrimmage. It's hard to beat a team that controls the line of scrimmage," he said.

In the first half alone, the rookie quarterback already threw four touchdown passes, which actually is a career-high for him. He hit Mike Evans from four yards out, threw scoring passes good for 13 yards to Vincent Jackson, another four yards to Russell Shepard, and finally 14 yards to Charles Sims. The fact that those touchdowns came from different receivers makes the record more special.

Winston's performance is definitely a good sign for the Bucs. The five touchdowns also tied the franchise record; and had he made one more, it would have broken the record. Aside from those, he also managed to complete 18 out of 24 passes and produced 227 yards out of it — something that's already impressive in itself. Likewise, Winston did not have a single turnover the whole game.

By the looks of it, Tampa Bay is currently in very good hands, and the team's future is bright with someone like Winston taking the reign. No doubt he'll become one of the best QBs in the league sooner than expected.
