The Lawyer's Red Corvette License Plate 'IDEFNDU'

Across the highway from our church is the county jail where I lead a weekly Bible study. As I was leaving yesterday, I noticed a red Corvette convertible parked near the courthouse with the license plate, "IDEFNDU." The attorney who drives it is probably very skilled in that line of work.

What about God's laws? Assuming you are a lawbreaker like the rest of humanity, who do you plan to have representing you when your case comes up on the docket? You are going to need a skilled defender, and one who has never lost a case. You will need the best that God can provide. Fortunately for you, there is such a Person.

His record is immaculate. His credentials are second to none. And His ability to defend His "clients" is supernatural. That is, it goes beyond anything you can fathom with your natural understanding.

You need His knowledge. You need His help. You need Him defending you. But will you make the call? Will you "pick up the phone" through prayer and ask Him to represent you? Or will you procrastinate and end up in God's courtroom without Jesus on your side?

"What's that?" you say. "Will some people really enter God's courtroom without Jesus on their side?" That is correct my friend. It will happen to many people just that way. And they will be devastated, and then horrified. But it doesn't have to happen to you. There is still time to enlist the help of Him who sits on the throne.

"For we all must appear before the judgment seat of Christ." (2 Cor. 5:10) The clock is ticking. Your appointment in God's courtroom is nearing. You are a lawbreaker. If you don't believe me, just compare your life to the 10 Commandments. Unless you have kept them perfectly, you are a lawbreaker.

Have you broken at least one of God's laws? Here is what the Bible says about you and me. "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it." (James 2:10) In other words, God could "throw the Book at you" in His courtroom. You are guilty as charged. So what is your defense? And even more importantly, who is your defense? Will you defend yourself on that day, or do you want to win your case?

If you want to come out a winner on Judgment Day, then turn to the One who speaks words of comfort to His children. In the words of the license plate, Jesus tells His followers in essence: "IDEFNDU." Christ doesn't drive a red Corvette. Instead, He controls the heavens and the earth. He can ride on the clouds if He chooses to do so, and the angels are His messengers.

What would Jesus do with a red Corvette anyway? He ascended up into heaven after His resurrection from the dead without the use of any strings, wires, or rockets. He is His own rocket. And He is the only One capable of defending you against the charges you are facing. His death on the cross paid your penalty. If you refuse to embrace that joyous truth, you will be left "holding the bag" and "without a prayer." It's true. The day is coming when many people will not be able to reach God through prayer. It will be too late for them.

The lawyer pays for his red Corvette with money from those he represents. Jesus paid for your sins with the red blood He shed on the cross. There is not a lawyer on earth who could adequately defend you on Judgment Day. Only Christ can do that for you and me. If you are guilty of sin, you need Christ to "represent you" and forgive you. If you are a perfect person, then I suppose you plan to enter heaven based on the merits of your case. So are you perfect, or do you need Jesus as your only defense?
