'The Mummy' Movie News: Cameras Start Grinding for Film's Reboot

The cameras have started rolling for "The Mummy" movie that will be top-billed by Tom Cruise this time.

While the unofficial leaked photos taken from the set don't suggest anything of what scene Cruise is in, they are a clear indication that the reboot of the movie previously starred by Brendan Frasier is already underway. Apart from Cruise, also seen in the leaked photos is Annabel Willis who is acting alongside the actor.

Other than Cruise and Willis, Sofia Boutella also stars in the film, playing the titular role. In fact, this is the first time for Universal to feature a female mummy for the franchise. The first actor to play the role of the mummified monster was Boris Karloff via Karl Freund's 1932 film feature. Tom Tyler and Lon Chaney Jr. also breathed life to the monster in the distant past. In the recent incarnations of the mummy, Arnold Vosloo played the role via "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" that starred Fraser.

This version of "The Mummy" will be helmed by Alex Kurtzman and will follow a story penned by Jon Spaihts. It is produced by Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel.

As compared to the previous "The Mummy" movies of Fraser, this still untitled "The Mummy" movie will showcase more horror. Another thing that will set this "The Mummy" movie apart from its predecessors is that it will be Universal's first ever film for its newly created Monster Universe set in the present times. It treads on the footsteps of the 2014 "Dracula Untold," which ended with a scene that brings the vampire in the present times.

Cruise plays the role of a former special-forces officer and Wallis takes on the role of a scientist. Jake Johnson is also a part of the movie as a member of the military force linked with Cruise's character. Previously, it was speculated that "The Mummy" reboot would involve the Navy SEALS. With the report revealing the character of Cruise, it is with high likelihood that the movie will, indeed, involve the military in the story.
