However, spoilers about the next and sixth season of "Vampire Diaries" point out that the actor was just toying with his legions of fans. Somerhalder will in fact return for the sixth season, but it is it unknown where Damon will be, according to TVLine.

Meanwhile, the end of season five did not look good for Damon. While Mystic Fall was saved from Markos and the Travellers, Damon was killed. Both Elena and Stefan were left to mourn the character, but there are many questions the afterlife and how Elena and Stefan will cope. "Vampire Diaries" showrunner Julie Plec recently discussed what lies ahead on the television series.

"It's really a character-defining journey for Stefan and it'll change him quite a lot," she told TVLine. "At what point does he decide to give up or keep searching for answers?"

Plec added that Stefan "lost something very profound, and there are a million ways he could go. He could go light, he could go dark, he could go pure, he could lose his mind and get on a motorcycle and drive to Miami."

Paul Wesley, who portrays Stefan, previously warned fans that the upcoming sixth season would completely "reset" the televisions series.

"[The season five finale] definitely establishes new parameters in the environment we'll be shooting in season six," the actor told TVGuide. "They reset things in a way, and the writers have the ability to now change the circumstances and locations of where the show takes place."

"The Vampire Diaries" season six is due back on the air in October.
