The actor went on to describe how season four will be different from previous seasons.

"It's not as kinetic or action packed-- it's a much quieter season and very much more about the character development. Don't get me wrong: We've still got some insane action sequences, but they're being driven a lot more by story," Lincoln said.

Executive producer Scott Gimple also spoke to TV Guide, explaining what he thinks the overall theme for season four will be.

"The theme for this season is, 'Are we too far gone? Can we go back to the people we were? Can we enjoy life, have close relationships, and can we even love anymore?' Even though they've found some kind of stability, they have a lot of challenges," Gimple said.

Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd spoke about how the challenges of season four will wear on "The Walking Dead" characters.

"There are threats from within and without, all descending upon them at the same time, characters respond in different ways. Some rise to the occasion, while it brings out the worst in others," Hurd said.

The season premiere of "The Walking Dead" airs Sunday, Oct 13 on AMC at 9/8c.
