Thin and Fat — At the Same Time?

One subject that always intrigues me is that of the "skinny but fat" individual-yes, they exist. If you grew up envious of a certain classmate who could eat whatever he or she wanted without gaining a pound, you might want to rethink those envious feelings. It turns out that people who can consume insurmountable amounts of junk, fatty, and/or sugary foods without gaining weight are not in the clear when it comes to health problems. Though these individuals have a slim physique and summer swimsuit season is their friend, they may suffer from internal fat, which can ultimately lead to health problems down the line.

How do you know if you have internal fat? You can certainly go to your doctor, however, despite the results-skinny or fat on the inside-you should remember that a great diet and consistent exercise are both important players when it comes to your health. You may eat what you consider to be a healthy diet, but your body still needs some exercise to burn off excess calories when, for example, you eat a piece (or two) of a colleague's birthday cake.

When it comes to your health, do not take shortcuts. The aisle of the grocery store is painted with advertisements for "low carb" this and "low sugar" that, but you need to read labels. Consuming foods that are low in sugar might actually be full of artificial sugars and flavors; it is better to eat a whole grain version of the product with a limited amount of real, not processed, sugar. Though low carbohydrate foods are not always bad, it is still important to remember the value of eating real, unprocessed foods. If you stick to a diet of real, whole grain, high protein foods with a mix of fruits and vegetables, you should not have to worry about being fat on the inside-especially if you add in exercise.

Getting into an exercise routine can be difficult, especially when you have a full-time job, a family, schoolwork, and more, however it is extremely important to find an exercise that fits into your schedule. Developing a routine is the hardest part, but it is easy from there.

If you are a person who has a great metabolism, allowing yourself to eat foods that would not be considered "healthy," you definitely need to think twice. Though having a fast metabolism can be wonderful, make sure that you are still eating foods that are kind to your body. Foods that are made with whole grains, fruits and vegetables that are low in fat and calories (there are exceptions like nuts), and low in sugar are the best choices.
