'Tokyo Ghoul' Season 3 Release Date: Is a Reboot Coming in 2016?

The second season of "Tokyo Ghoul" has long ended but still there have been no official announcements coming from Studio Pierrot. As such, "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 release rumors continue to swirl around, one of which is a possible reboot in 2016.

Because "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 has been a long time coming, fans are now expressing concerns, especially regarding the upcoming season's direction. Although the first two seasons of the anime were based on scripts by Chuji Mikasano, fans have noticed how the Studio Pierrot animation series diverges from the manga series on which it is based.

Adding backbone to this divergence theory, a Redditor has uploaded what is supposed to be the original draft for "Tokyo Ghoul" Root. Some fans have taken a look at the draft and claim manga creator Sui Ishida wanted the anime version to have Kaneki and Hide die together in flames at the end, but apparently, Studio Pierrot has taken another route. Other fans have also noted how the Kaneki in the anime is different from the Kaneki in the manga in that the latter had more personality.

One Redditor, however, pointed out that it was probably the case of Pierrot simply following Ishida's draft. But since he was constrained in certain ways, like just having 12 episodes in the anime, the Redditor supposes he might just have gone with the best route in the comics version of the series like adding more details, which resulted in the current feeling among fans that the anime has greatly diverged from the manga.

Because of this, fans have expressed that they want the entire anime rebooted, this time staying faithful to the manga series. Of course, there's no guarantee that the animation studio shares the same feeling as the fans nor that it would be persuaded to do a reboot based on fan demand.

Neither the recent "Tokyo Ghoul: Jack" OVA nor "Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto" hinted anything about a restart to the story, according to Inquisitr. The publication goes on to say that it would be more likely for the studio to simply follow the basic plot details of ":re" and introduce Haise Sasaki and the CCG group.

The only information regarding "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3's release date comes by way of a statement made by FUNimation Entertainment President Gen Fukunaga way back in September. In a press release for a "Tokyo Ghoul" video game, which the company has since confirmed with news outlets, Fukunaga said,
"Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of Tokyo Ghoul have been clamoring for a mobile game. With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher."

So is a reboot coming in 2016? Nothing is really certain at this point about this, but "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 is set to come this year.
