The newly divorced actor is reportedly reconsidering his involvement in the controversial religion following the breakdown of his 5-year marriage to Katie Holmes, which marked his third divorce, according to reports.

"Tom hasn't admitted that he's definitely leaving Scientology for good but he's distanced himself from those in the church and has been hanging out with good friends who aren't part of the religion," a source reportedly told Star Magazine.

"Tom's been leaning on friends who have different perspectives, getting advice on moving on from Katie as well as on everything he's been going through with Scientology," the alleged insider went on. "He's finally seeing that being such an advocate for Scientology hasn't served him as well as he'd hoped- he's gone through three divorces, and his public perception has sunk to an all-time low."

Cruise, 50, was reportedly left blindsided after Holmes, 33, served him with divorce papers on June 28. Their divorce was finalized by August.

Holmes, who was raised Catholic, was reportedly concerned that Cruise would send their 6-year-old daughter Suri off to a radical Scientology group known as the Sea Organization, which allegedly prompted her divorce filing.

Cruise, a devout Scientologist, first became involved with Scientology in 1990 through his first wife, Mimi Rogers, and has since remained at the forefront of church affairs and he regularly promotes the church practice.

He had allegedly planned for Suri to follow the same Scientology-based ideas he did. As part of the terms of his and Holmes' divorce settlement, the actor agreed not to expose Suri to anything relating to the controversial cult.

"Katie insisted that Suri's nanny and bodyguards always accompany her when she visits Tom. Katie did this for several reasons. This will ensure a smooth and easy transition for Suri when she is with Tom," a source previously told Radar Online.

"Suri is Katie's number one priority. Tom only has Scientologists that work for him and Katie insisted that her staff will always be with their daughter. Under terms of the settlement, Suri isn't permitted to be exposed to anything Scientology-related and this includes going to any Scientology churches, parties, etc. Katie made sure that this was ironclad in the agreement," the insider added.
