'Tomb Raider' Shows Lara Croft's Humanity More, Roar Uthaug Says

The trouble with creating a film that already has a predecessor can prove to be nerve-wracking, as it is bound to be compared to the original. In the 2018 edition of "Tomb Raider," however, moviegoers will get to see a glimpse of a part of the heroine no one saw before.

In an interview with GQ Magazine, director Roar Uthaug shared that the upcoming reprisal won't be anything like the first two films. It will be revealing more of Lara Croft's humanity, thus it will be more about her journey to gaining the moniker of Tomb Raider.

When asked if he saw the first two movies, Uthaug replied, "I've seen the films — they were a lot of fun and Angelina Jolie was a terrific Lara Croft. We are [making] a very different film, an origin story and I think fans will love Alicia (Vikander) in the role."

He further adds meat to what fans can expect from Vikander's portrayal of the commonly thought strong-willed heroine. "This movie will introduce Lara as a young woman who hasn't yet found her way and her place in the world; a young woman with great spirit and potential," he says. "We follow her struggles and her journey toward becoming the person she was meant to be."

Aside from the portrayal, how will she look like as Lara Croft? GQ also has some exclusive photos of the actress playing the character. While she sports the familiar grey tank top, she looks meeker than Jolie did, which in a way makes sense as it traces her origins.

The synopsis of the story revolves around a young Lara Croft, an independent lady who tries to make ends meet after her father vanishes when she was still a teenager. While she struggles to find her place in the world, she decides to go to the last expedition his father went to, starting the events of her becoming the Tomb Raider.

"Tomb Raider" arrives in cinemas on March 16, 2018.
