We saw fireworks in the third round of the Capital One Cup as local rivals clashed at White Hart Lane with Tottenham Hotspur hosting Arsenal.

The match was held yesterday, 2:45 ET, September 23.

Both teams wanted to make their claim as one of the best teams in the country and the League Cup is always a great place to show their supremacy.

Tottenham reached the final last season and they had hoped to return and this time bring home a title for the team.

In the last-16 last year, they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 to advance to the quarters. From there, they faced tougher opponents but looked great as they thrashed Premier League rivals Newcastle United 4-0 to reach the semis. Against Sheffield United, Tottenham took a 1-0 lead in the first leg of the match-up before settling for a 2-2 draw in their away leg – resulting in them advancing to the finals with a 3-2 aggregate win.

In the final, they faced Chelsea and could not find an answer to stop the Blues as they eventually lost 2-0 to end as runners-up in the competition.

On the other hand, Arsenal are looking to advance to the final stages as they fell short last season when they faced Southampton.

The third round battle last year saw the Gunners take an early lead, only to allow Southampton to claw their way back and take a 2-1 win to eliminate Arsenal.

Their ticket to the last-16 is to eliminate one of their fiercest rivals in Tottenham but history does not favour Arsene Wenger's men.

The last time the two teams met at White Hart Lane resulted in a 2-1 win for the Spurs.

Mesut Ozil gave the Gunners the lead but Harry Kane came up big to score a brace in the second half to hand Tottenham the victory.

In this match, it was surprisingly Matthieu Flamini who scored twice for Arsenal, making way for his team to advance to the fourth round of the competition. Flamini's first goal came at the match's 26th minute. In the game's 56th minute, a low cross from Nacer Chadli was unexpectedly turned into a self-goal by Calum Chambers. This put the two teams into a tie which was broken at the match's 78th minute when Flamini scored a goal again.
