'Transformers 5' News, Update: Mark Wahlberg Says Michael Bay Will Return to Direct Sequel

Weeks before "Transformers: Age of Extinction" debuted in the cinemas, franchise director Michael Bay already made it clear that he'd be passing the directorial baton to someone else or, according to latest reports, to a group of directors for "Transformers 5."

However, Mark Wahlberg, who played Cade Yeager in the latest installment, expressed his optimism that Bay will "ultimately direct" the upcoming follow-up film.

In a press interview for "Ted 2" with Seth McFarlane, Wahlberg was asked if he had any updates on the "Transformers" sequel.

"I don't. Just that Akiva [Goldsman] and those guys are starting to write and break stories, and stuff like that. But [Michael] Bay is in Malta shooting Benghazi, and I'm in New Orleans shooting Deepwater. We'll get together when he gets back," the "Shooter" star told Collider.

When asked about Bay's likelihood of directing Transformers 5, Wahlberg simply replied with a "yes."

Bay will still be on board as the executive producer on the fifth film. "His decision to return as director hinges on the strength of the script," Collider speculated.

Paramount Pictures is, on the other hand, looking to expand the robotic universe by employing a team of writers which might see a possible solo feature of Bumblebee as well as a prequel about their home planet Cybertron.

"Transformers 5" is slated to premiere in 2017.
