UFC Fight News 2016: Jon Jones Plans on Three More Fights Before Moving Up

Jon Jones had a meaningful question and answer session with mixed martial arts fans on Twitter last Sunday, where he revealed that he wants to fight three more times in the light heavyweight division before eventually moving up to the heavyweight. If he had it his way, he wants those fights with three particular opponents already in mind.

According to an earlier report from the UFC, there is a planned rematch between the former champion Jones and the current champion, Daniel Cormier. However, no date or venue has been set for now, but the announcement certainly is in line with what Jones hoped for.

The American MMA star defeated Cormier in their January 2015 fight via unanimous decision to wrest the light heavyweight title. However, he was quickly stripped off the same title four months after because of an arrest involving a hit-and-run incident. Cormier went on to fight for the vacant belt against Anthony Johnson, winning via submission.

A rematch between these two fighters is a classic in the making. They've successfully built a rivalry starting in their first fight and highlighted by the stage brawl during one of the press conferences.

After taking a break from the sport, many MMA experts predicted that Jones will come back and campaign in the heavyweight division. While it is true that he's planning to do just that, he still believes there is much more to prove at the light heavyweight class. Aside from Cormier, he intends to fight Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson.

He also owns a win over Gustafsson about three years ago during UFC 165; a fight he won by unanimous decision and went on to become the Fight of the Year for 2013. He was supposed to be fighting Johnson at UFC 187 in defense of the title he won against Cormier earlier that year but he was arrested in the hit-and-run incident that injured a pregnant woman.
