Undercover Video Shows Planned Parenthood Staffer Encouraging Sex-Selective Abortion

May 30, 2012|9:30 am

The pro-life Live Action group released an undercover video Tuesday showing a Planned Parenthood clinic worker willing to help a woman abort her baby if it's a girl. The group plans to reveal more videos that it says expose the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States.

"The search-and-destroy targeting of baby girls through prenatal testing and abortion is a pandemic that is spreading across the globe," said Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, in a statement. "Research proves that sex-selective abortion has now come to America. The abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, is a willing participant."

Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, responded immediately, calling the video manipulative and a hoax.

"Six weeks ago a former staff member serving in an entry-level position did not follow our protocol for providing information and guidance when presented with a highly unusual patient scenario. Planned Parenthood insists on the highest quality patient care, and if we ever become aware of a staff member not meeting these high standards, we take swift action," Planned Parenthood asserted. "Within three days of this patient interaction, the staff member's employment was ended and all staff members at this affiliate were immediately scheduled for retraining in managing unusual patient encounters. Today opponents of Planned Parenthood are promoting an edited video of that hoax patient encounter."

In the video, which is the first in a new series titled "Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America," a woman enters an Austin, Texas, Planned Parenthood clinic on April 11 and discusses her desire to terminate her baby if it's a girl with a counselor named Rebecca.

The counselor informs the woman that an abortion can be performed up until 23 weeks of pregnancy and that it's usually at five months that the sex of the baby can be detected. But doctors have told women that they cannot terminate after 16 weeks, the counselor noted. Rebecca also said by the time the gender is detected, the brain and "pretty much everything" is already developed.

With that, the counselor – who admitted to having two abortions – advised the woman on how to abuse Medicaid to pay for detecting the baby's gender for a late-term abortion. She also advised that the woman not tell the doctor about her plans for sex-selective abortion when getting an ultrasound at an OB/GYN. She was then invited back for a late-term abortion if it was a girl.

Planned Parenthood said the claims by Live Action were false and that in "highly unusual and scripted scenarios, hoax patients sought services related to sex selection."

The abortion provider did not give a reason as to what policies the clinic worker violated or why she was let go, according to LifeNews.com. The organization also condemned gender bias in its statement but did not address sex-selection abortions or say they would not perform them.

When asked by The Christian Post why she thought Planned Parenthood did not address sex-selection abortions specifically, Rose of Live Action said, "Planned Parenthood statements are riddled with inconsistencies and contradictions. They are talking out of both sides of their mouths. They can't take a stand because the reality is they are perpetuating gender bias for their selective late-term abortions of little girls and at the same time claiming to be a non-discriminatory organization that defends women. The two cannot go together."

Only three states ban sex-selection abortion. The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill that would ban the abortions in what some refer to as "the escalating war on baby girls."

According to Live Action, six studies in the past four years indicate that there are thousands of "missing girls" in the U.S., many from sex-selective abortion. The U.K., India, Australia, and other countries ban sex-selective abortion, but the U.S., save for three states, does not. On Wednesday, Congress will debate the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA), which would ban sex-selective abortions nationally.

"Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real 'war on women,'" said Rose. "Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls."
