'Vampire Diaries' Season 7 News, Spoilers: Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec Dish on Details

Producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec recently attended the ATX Television Festival on Sunday to headline their fan-favorite supernatural TV drama series "Vampire Diaries" which is on its way to Season 7.

Williamson and Plec dropped some serious hints about the hit CW show and dished on some of the pivotal events on its previous seasons.

According to Williamson, the team really wanted to stay away from the LJ Smith books and make something "more 'Dark Shadows' and less 'Twilight.'" During its pre-pilot days, both Williamson and Plec even played around some incredible ideas like bringing a gargoyle to life.

The discussion eventually led to a Nina Dobrev-less Season 7. Earlier last month, cast member Ian Somerhalder teased about a more messy, "sexy, edgy, volatile stories" to occur in upcoming season. The actor who played the character Damon Salvatore even went on to say that he's now enthused to return to a "Season 1 version of Damon."

Plec expanded that notion brought up by Somelhalder by saying that the upcoming season would now be about showing a side of the character which viewers haven't seen in a while. He was made into that "perfect boyfriend" and "ideal mate" for Elena (Dobrev), but with the latter already gone, that would have to change.

"He now has more freedom to kind of be messy with his choices," Plec explained. "I think you'll see a darker Damon with the sort of wisdom of his experience, but a freedom to act out as he may feel like he needs to."

Williamson meanwhile clarified that fans won't necessarily see a "repeat of Season 1," instead the next season will "feel completely unlike what we've seen before."
