'Vikings' Season 4 News, Plot Spoilers: Michael Hirst Teases Rollo's Betrayal, Lagertha's Quest to Regain Earldom and the Strained Ragnar-Floki Relationship
The third season of the hit historical TV drama series "Vikings" concluded with jaw-dropping events and the succeeding chapter is said to bring forth more twists and interesting storylines.
Spoiler alert for those who haven't seen the finale episode titled "The Dead:" the brave king of the Northmen, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) was alive and has scored evenly with Emperor Charles of West Francia (Lothaire Bluteau), Rollo (Clive Standen) chose to remain in the settlements and was offered the hand of Princess Gisla (Morgane Polanski), and then towards the end of the episode, Floki learned that Ragnar has known all along that he killed Athelstan (George Blagden).
Officially renewed for a fourth season in March, fans were left hankering for more details as to what awaits them when the show returns next year. Here's what we heard:
Variety recently spoke with show creator Michael Hirst where he dished out some details for the next season.
Rollor's Second Betrayal
Rollo has once taken up arms against Ragnar in the previous seasons. In season 3, he was offered an opportunity that could once again pit him against his brother.
"I's a second betrayal, but it's a much bigger betrayal. He's been promised huge amounts of land. In fact, the land is what we now know as Normandy so it's very big, and the title and a bride and everything… he's going to want to make that work," Hirst said (via Variety).
Lagertha's Hope of Regaining Hedeby
After having spent so much time in Wessex, Ragnar's ex-wife loses her title to Kalf (Ben Robson). Hirst was asked by the media outlet if she will still try to regain her Earldom.
"What I can say is that yes, the end game, the result of all those issues will be something quite unexpected," Hirst answered.
Floki's Crime Against Ragnar
Hirst went on to tease that the issue between Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) and Ragnar could be one of Season 4's big issues.
"It's clearly an issue that is going to have to be resolved. It's a huge thing in terms of who Ragnar himself has lost along the way … This is clearly devastating for him, but even so, you might wonder how long he's known and why perhaps he hasn't done anything about it before," Hirst explained.
"All these things are pertinent to what happens in season four, but certainly it's a big, big issue and it will feature in a very, very important way in season four with hopefully some unexpected results," he said.
Deadline reported that production for "Vikings" Season 4 will commence this spring in Ireland and will arrive back to the small screens in 2016.
