Washington Redskins DL Jonathan Allen Undergoes Foot Surgery, Could Miss the Rest of the Season

Jonathan Allen's rookie season is probably over.

The Washington Redskins initially thought that they were going to lose Allen for only three to four weeks while he recovers from a sprain to the Lisfranc area of his left foot. But after he consulted with renowned foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson on Tuesday, it was revealed that the rookie defensive lineman had to undergo surgery to repair the damage in his feet. Now he's expected to miss the rest of the season.

According to ESPN's John Keim, Allen had multiple screws inserted into his left foot and he's going to be on the shelf for at least three months.

The team has already announced that they are placing Allen on the injured reserve list, but Redskins head coach Jay Gruden thinks there's a chance he can return later in the season.

"We got better news after the surgery that it wouldn't be as lengthy as some of these surgeries typically are. So that's good news, but we still have to rehab it. He is a big man and sometimes bigger guys take a little bit longer but we will wait and see. We will just play it by ear and hopefully we see him again, but it is up to the rehab," Gruden said.

Allen is eligible to rejoin the active roster once he has spent at least eight weeks on the injured reserve list. Second-year pro Anthony Lanier II is expected to get the start with him on the sidelines.

Losing Allen is a huge blow for the Redskins' defensive line and they are going to feel his absence in the coming weeks.

"He creates havoc. It goes without saying that to not have him for a while like that is pretty big," cornerback Josh Norman said, via the Washington Post.

Meanwhile, the Redskins have announced that they have signed Ondre Pipkins to the practice squad.
