Wes Anderson Film to Open at Cannes

This year Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" will open the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival on May 16.

"Moonrise Kingdom" marks the second time in a row that an American director kicks off the French movie premiere fest. Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris" opened the festival last year.

"Wes Anderson is one of the rising powers of American cinema, to which he brings a highly personal touch, particularly in 'Moonrise Kingdom,' which once again is a testimony to the creative freedom in which he continues to evolve," explained the festival's general delegate Thierry Fremaux in a statement.

"Sensitive and independent, this admirer of Fellini and Renoir is also in his own right a brilliant and inventive filmmaker," added Fremaux.

The film includes an A-list cast with actors such as Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, and Jason Schwartzman.

"Moonrise Kingdom" takes place on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965. It follows two 12-year-olds who fall in love and strike a plan to run away together into the wilderness, much to the dismay of the adults in their lives.

It is a "tormented and surprising story of children and adults during the stormy days of the summer of 1965," according to Deadline.

The child actors are Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward.

"Moonrise Kingdom" was co-written by Anderson and Roman Coppola. The films hits theaters May 25.

Anderson has also helmed films such as "The Royal Tenebaums," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and "The Darjeeling Limited."

At another film festival, the lineup for the first Sundance to take place in London this year was announced by Robert Redford Monday. The four-day event will see Julie Deply's "Two Days In New York" with Deply and Chris Rock, "Chasing Ice" directed by Jeff Orlowski and Josh Radnor's "Liberal Arts."
