What Does the Bible Say About Dressing?
Some ardent Christians are so obsessed with interpreting Bible verses literally that they miss the real meaning of the message in favor of boastful pride. One message in the New Testament that has fallen to wrong interpretation concerns wearing of jewelry, accessories and costly attire.
Those who adhere to this prohibition refer to two verses in the Bible — 1 Peter 3:3 which instructs, "Do not let your adorning be external — the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear;" and 1 Timothy 2:9 that discourages wearing gold or pearls or costly attire.
This is a case of taking verses out of context. Confining the attention to these particular passages leaves the impression that wearing jewelry, ornaments and signature clothes are against God's will. But reading further the succeeding verses would reveal their true intent.

A continued reading of 1 Peter 3:4–5 admonishes the reader that beauty should not come from outward adornment but should come from the inner self, with emphasis on the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is of great worth in God's sight.
Here, Peter is highlighting the contrast between outward, superficial beauty which is fleeting against inward beauty which is lasting. It didn't say that wearing jewelry and braided hair is a sin. However, developing a godly character is more worthwhile. A woman's "gentle and quiet spirit" matters more than her external beauty.
On the other hand, reading 1 Timothy 2:10 advices women to dress modestly with decency and propriety. Elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls and expensive clothes were again mentioned here but in comparison with good deeds, which is more appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
Peter and Paul's main point is that God is more concerned about the contents of a woman's heart than her outward appearance. The best way to impart this message is to make a comparison with a dressed-up woman. God looks on the inside regardless of what a person wears.
