Who are the 'Defenders?' A Look at Marvel and Netflix's Newest Team Up

New Marvel Team Set for 2017

At the recently concluded San Diego Comic Con Marvel and Netflix debuted a trailer for the newest Marvel show the "Defenders."

While the short trailer did not show any footage of the show, information has been confirmed about which Marvel heroes will be making the core of the group.

For those who are not familiar with the team of the Defenders, they are a secondary group of heroes usually teaming up to defend the world against supernatural forces.

However it seems that for the Netflix version the team will be made up of heroes trying to save New York City.

Daredevil

Arguably the most well-known member of the group, Daredevil will be played once again by Charile Cox who played the blind hero in the self-titled Netflix series.

Daredevil has his five other senses heightened since he lost his sight in an accident which involved chemical waste when he was a child. Daredevil's alter ego Matt Murdock is a defense attorney who takes on cases of those who cannot stand up for themselves.

Out of all the Defenders, Daredevil has the most air time as his series has so far reached two seasons.

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is the only other member of the Defenders to have her series already air. Krysten Ritter will be reprising her role as the gritty super heroine turned personal investigator.

Jones' powers also stem from contact of chemicals as a child, however Jones now refuses to don a super hero alias as her previous attempt at being a super hero named Jewel failed.

Luke Cage

Luke Cage has also been on Netflix but not on his own show. Cage was featured heavily in season one of the "Jessica Jones" solo series. The actor who played Cage, Mike Colter will once again be playing the hero in the "Defenders"

Cage possesses highly dense skin which cannot be pierced or broken; he also has superhuman strength and stamina. In the comics his powers came from a top secret experiment done on Cage as a young adult. Previous Cage took the name Power Man as his superhero alias, but has dropped the name and now just goes by Luke Cage.

It should be noted that Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are married in the comics and have a on and off relationship in the "Jessica Jones" series.

Iron Fist

Iron Fist is the newcomer to the group and will be played by Finn Jones. It should be noted that both Luke Cage and Iron Fist are set to have their own solo series on Netflix in the near future.

Iron Fist, also known as Danny Rand, got his powers when his father took him and his family on a trek to find the mystical city of K'un-L'un. During the trek both his parent were murdered and Danny was taken in and learned the cities martial arts.

In the comics, Iron Fist and Power Man have a long standing friendship and even founded the Heroes for Hire group.

While no solid date for the show has been given, Netflix and Marvel have the "Defenders" set for sometime in 2017.
