Wii U Sales: Console Outsold by PS Vita Handheld

The Wii U sales were less than impressive in the U.K. for 2013 as Nintendo's latest console was outsold by the struggling PS Vita.

This is an impressive feat for the PS Vita as it was still able to beat out the Wii U despite a 41.5 percent sales drop from 2012.

The bestselling system in the U.K. wasn't even a home based console. Nintendo managed to score a solid victory with the 3DS as the combination of the original, 3DS XL and 2DS helped the company to have the highest selling gaming system in the country. The Xbox 360 was the second highest with the PS4 in the third spot and PS3 in the fourth.

Video game hardware sales were up by five percent in units thanks to the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One.

The data used for this report was compiled using Chart-Track data and reported by Eurogamer.

Nintendo hopes to sell 9 million Wii U units before the end of its fiscal year on March 31 2014. In order to accomplish this task, the company would need to sell 2 million Wii U's per month.

This goal seems nearly impossible for Nintendo who has struggled with the console since its initial launch. Wii U is however, faring much better in the U.S. as sales have climbed by 340% in recent months. Growing popularity in the U.S. could help Nintendo reach the 9 million mark.

The Super Mario World 3D release helped boost interest in the Wii U as the game sold 215,000 units in its first eight days.

Wii U is only expected to sell about 25 percent as well as its predecessor the Wii, according to analysts and will most likely remain a system that will find its success in first party games.
