'Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus' News: Bethesda Defends Its Politically Controversial Slogan

"Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" has caught the attention of everyone, even those outside the gaming community. Recent reports have revealed that game publisher Bethesda has defended the slogan of the game, which is "make America Nazi-free again."

Developed by MachineGames, "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" is one of the most highly anticipated game titles in the community. Beginning with its successful and hyped up trailer, fans have will only have a few more weeks to wait before the game is released.

"[In the game] freeing America is the first step to freeing the world," Bethesda's vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines told GamesIndustry.biz. "So the idea of #NoMoreNazis in America is, in fact, what the entire game (and franchise) is about. At the time none of us expected that the game would be seen as a comment on current issues, but here we are. Bethesda doesn't develop games to make specific statements or incite political discussions. We make games that we think are fun, meaningful, and immersive for a mature audience."

Hines also goes on to say that if there is an issue with the slogan of "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus," then people might want to think about why it is controversial in the first place. His answer to the critics emphasizes that although it was not their intention to promote a slogan that is considered as a criticism for the current administration in the U.S., they have taken a stand against Nazis in general and as illustrated by history.

Some fans claim that Bethesda might do well to change the nature of their slogan, if only to rid it of its unintended political implications. On the other hand, fans lauded the effective marketing strategy and praised them for taking a stand against Nazis and being vocal about it.

"Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" is scheduled to be released on Oct. 27 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
