WWE News and Updates 2016: Kurt Angle Returning to WWE? Former Star Could Be Back Next Year

The 6-time world champ might end his career where it all started.

There is no doubt that Kurt Angle is one of the most renowned heels in WWE history. Routinely booed by the crowd and embracing the chant "You Suck" throughout his storied career, the egotistic character became an unforgettable superstar.

Being wrestling's staple heel may have made a mark on sports entertainment fans, as rumors still float on whether or not the company is interested in letting him return. Throughout this year, however, Angle had made sure these rumors are kept alive.

To follow the news on the superstar's possible comeback is a dizzying feat. The first half of this year saw Angle dropping bombs during interviews about talks with WWE's top brass, the brand split and, more recently, a return in the next two years.

Interviewed on The Ric Flair Show podcast Saturday, all he did was drop vague hints. He talked about mutual interests between him and the company, but the direction they want to go with him is uncertain.

The 47-year-old wrestler retired from Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling in February, and is looking to end his career with the company that started it all. "It's just good to be able to let the past go behind you and you know, if something does happen, it just feels good to know that I will end my career there," Angle said.

Angle also talked about his recent match against former WWE superstar Cody Rhodes under independent Northeast Wrestling, praising the latter for his brand of entertainment.

Burying the hatchet

A few months ago, in June, he told Mark Madden about a "good conversation" with former in-ring colleague and WWE executive Triple H on the possibility of his return. After burying the hatchet with the company, Angle said he had not been contacted yet, not even during the much hyped brand split. He also said the company wanted to push young talent rather than bring back old superstars, which puts his return in limbo.

In March, he told The World According to Wrestling that there will come a time for him to grace the WWE ring once again. However, he did not want to go back into the ring this year, nor does he think the company would welcome him with open arms. Angle cited his DUI charges over the past years, and the doubts cast on his health.

During his decorated career—holding WWE world titles six times, TNA and Japanese wrestling belts 13 times—Angle had battled injuries in his spine and neck, even suffering from a tumor in his neck last year. Moreover, he plans to re-enter the ring while nearing 50. The Undertaker had occasional matches in the pro circuit at the same age, but he did not have the same issues that Angle had.

Nevertheless, fans awaiting the Olympic medalist's return would have to hold off their "You Suck" chants for the next two years—if WWE permits.
