'Xena: Warrior Princess' Former Lead Star Lucy Lawless Says 'They're Fools' Not to Make the Reboot

There is good news for fans who have long been rooting for the return of NBC's hit action-adventure TV drama series "Xena: Warrior Princess." Reports suggest that it won't be long before the "Hercules" spinoff returns to the small screen.

"NBC and NBC Universal International are prepping a reboot" on the popular Lucy Lawless-led TV series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is already in an "extremely early development stages" and the producers are currently on a lookout for a writer.

The people who are on-hands on the project are original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi who both intended the next Xena show to be a "modern reboot."

As for its lead cast member, THR said that it is still "unclear" how Lawless could get involved in the upcoming series. Nonetheless, tipsters for the media outlet suggest that the 47-year-old New Zealand actress could have "both a role onscreen and behind the scenes."

During the recent Comic-Con International panel for Starz's "Ash vs. Evil Dead," the "Spartacus" actress recognized the huge appeal of the show and said that it would be a bad move for the network not to do the reboot.

"I've been pitching that show … because … there's a swell of interest still," she said. "I'm always being peppered with questions [about] when the Xena movie is coming. Guys, I'm pitching my ass off to make it happen, whether it's with me or not."

"Don't waste this opportunity; reinvigorate that franchise!" she went on to say. "It's an insane international character. They're fools not to bring it back. It's funny, it's sexy, it's action."

As for its release date, the drama is eyed for a 2016 opening although it is still too early to confirm if the reboot series would only be getting a limited episode run or a more standard full-season order.
