The comedy and drama actor, whose career spans over 40 years, leaves behind three children from two previous marriages with the late Valerie Velardiand and the late Marsha Garces.

Robin's son with Valerie is Zachary Pym, 31, while he had two children with Marsha – Zelda Rae, 25 and Cody Alan, 19.

Mr. Williams' publicist Mara Buxbaum released a statement yesterday suggesting that the actor had been battling depression.

"Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time," the statement read.

Many have expressed their bereavement upon learning of the passing of the legendary comedian. President Barack Obama, in a statement, called Williams "one of a kind."

"Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit," the president was quoted saying.

"The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin's family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams," Obama said.

Other stars, many of whom Mr. Williams had worked with, also took to their social media to give their reaction of the news. The names include Mara Wilson, who played as William's daughter in "Mrs. Doubtfire"; Minnie Driver, a fellow "Good Will Hunting" actor; and Ben Stiller, Williams' co-star in "Night at the Museum," to name a few.

The late Oscar-winner's wife of three years, Susan Schneider, also released a statement.

"This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken," she said.

"On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions," Schneider added.
