Barack Obama Reveals Thoughts About Michelle's 'Single Mother' Comments

President Barack Obama recently opened up about his thoughts concerning his wife's recent comments where she described herself as a single mother.

The Obamas are parents to two daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11. However Mrs. Obama made it clear that her husband is so busy that she can identify with parents who raise their children alone when she spoke to CBS affiliate WCAX in Vermont last March.

Still, the president did not seem offended by his wife's words.

"You know, as somebody who has stumbled over my lines many times, I tend to cut my wife or anybody some slack when it comes to just a slip to the tongue," Obama told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie recently. "But there's no doubt that there've been times where Michelle probably felt like a single mom."

During the time when he was campaigning for the 2012 election that took place last November, Obama recalled not being able to see the First Lady for a week at times.

"And she was still working and having to look after the girls. And she definitely, I think, understands the burdens that women in particular tend to feel if they're both responsible for child rearing and they're responsible for working at the same time," he told Guthrie. "And that's kept a lot of women not only single, but also married around the country."

Mrs. Obama decided to clarify her initial statements about being a busy single mother soon after the words escaped her mouth in March.

"Believe me, as a busy single mother– or, I shouldn't say single, as a busy mother," the first lady of the United States told WCAX in Vermont last March. "Sometimes, you know, when you've got a husband who is President, it can feel a little single. But he's there."

The First Lady went on to elaborate about some of the tasks that she had to undertake even before Barack Obama became the president.

"But as a busy working mom, and before coming to the White House, I was in that position, you know, as well," Mrs. Obama told WCAX. "Working, driving kids to practice, not having enough time to shop or cook, not having the energy, you know, the resources weren't the issue but time and energy is key."
