'Dexter' Season 8 Leading to A Spin-Off?

With the final season of Showtim's hit drama "Dexter" well on its way, many are wondering if a spin-off is on the horizon. After all, the show is still very popular, and many characters have rich plot lines that could take sole focus in a show of their own.

While Showtime and "Dexter" producers won't admit to plans for a spin-off, they also won't definitively rule out the possibility.

Sara Colleton, an executive producer of "Dexter," spoke with TV line on the subject of a spin-off.

"We are so focused on finishing the series up before we overstay our welcome that spinoffs are the very last thing on anybody's mind. We just want to use every bit of emotional and physical energy [on the final season]," she said.

However David Nevins, head of the Showtime network, said that nobody is ruling out the possibility of a "Dexter" spin-off.

"We won't rule it out; all options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There's nothing actively happening, but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there. I won't rule it out, but I'm not actively planning anything," Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans and critics believe a spin-off may be on the way based on how plots are playing out in this season of the show.

James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly speculates that certain events taking place this season are only in place to set up a spin-off, which he believes could be focused on Dexter's sister Deb.

"If this season only exists to set up the rumored Deb-focused spin-off, then okay, maybe we care whether Quinn or Miller become sergeant," Hibberd wrote in a review of the most recent "Dexter" episode, entitled "This Little Piggy."
