'Game of Thrones' News, Latest Update: HBO President Says He's Open to Prequel Show

HBO's president of programming Michael Lombardo recently appeared for the 2015 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour where he was immediately asked by the media about the network's wildly popular fantasy drama TV series "Game of Thrones."

The concern from the part of the audience is how long will the TV show run knowing that it has already caught up to George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire," which the small screen series is based on.

"I think 'seven seasons and out' has never been the conversation," Lombardo answered. "The question is how much beyond the seventh season we're going to do. Obviously we're shooting six now and hopefully discussing seven. They're feeling like they're probably two more years after six. I've said before, I would always love for them to change their minds but that's what we're looking at right now."

Lombardo was further asked about the possibility of having a "Game of Thrones" prequel, which would probably tackle on the Targaryens – their rise and decline from power – this is what he said:

"I would be open to anything that Dan and David wanted to do about Game of Thrones or almost any subject matter. It would really depend fully for us on what they wanted to do. I think you're right, there's enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel. But you'd have to have George and Dan and David decide they want to tackle that. At this point, all the focus is on figuring out the next few years of this show. We haven't had any conversations about that at this point."

As expected, the HBO official was asked to confirm the death of Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

"Dead is dead is dead is dead," Lombardo gave the rather depressing answer. "Yes. Everything I've seen, heard or read, Jon Snow is dead."

"Game of Thrones" Season 6 is slated to premiere sometime in 2016.
