Gamescom Awards 2016: 'Legend of Zelda' Bags Best Overall Game; 'Final Fantasy XV', 'Battlefield 1' and Other Winners This Year

"Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" bagged the best overall awards at Gamescom 2016. The high-fantasy video game emerged on top of 200 entries and 73 nominations that include "Final Fantasy XV" and "Battlefield 1." Apart from the high-profile games, there are also indie titles in the annual Gamescom event.

Best of Gamescom 2016: "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild"

Legend of Zelda is limited to Nintendo's Wii U platform but it did not stop gamers to vote for it. Another reason for the franchise's success is the strategic placement of nomination. Developer Capcom skipped E3 events since 2015 so that Zelda can focus the traffic to Gamescom 2016. Capcom also delayed the release date from original late 2016 to undisclosed outing next year.

According to producer Eiji Aonuma, the original pre-completion release of the 19th installment was scrapped. The decision is to finish the project and aim for costumer satisfaction. Aonuma believes that this strategy can propel Breath of the Wilds into another award by 2017.

Consumer Award: "Battlefield 1"

Meanwhile, Battlefield 1 grabs Consumer Awards category. The strategy game sets apart from competitors by focusing the theme into past warfare. In contrary, other games presented are diving into ultra-futuristic concepts that limit the gamers options.

Design director Lars Gustavsson believes that another appeal to Battlefield 1 is the focus to historical accuracy. Several game modes are presented with historical value including gears like bayonets and era-fighters. Gustavsson also admits that the EA team is watching History Channel to learn from the past conflicts. The knowledge earned were later culled and incorporated to "Battlefield 1."

Best Role-Playing Game: "Final Fantasy XV"

Noctis is supposed to invade game platforms this September but "Final Fantasy XV" developer Square Enix decided to push it a month further. What resulted to the title's runaway win are the very promising graphics and gameplay demo in Gamescom.

According to director Hajime Tabata, the month extension will ensure that all game-related issues were addressed. He also promised that the release version is as polished as possible with no room for half-cooked.Tabata added that even the patch for the game is available from day one. The patch will ensure continuity and no moment is misspent for in-game runs once the gamers bot bored.
