London Fletcher Honored at Super Bowl Breakfast

Although his team fell short of the 2011-2012 NFL championship, Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher will be honored with the Bart Starr Award Saturday.

Fletcher will receive the award from Athletes in Action, an organization that honors NFL players who have displayed excellent leadership and character on the field and in the community.

The Redskins linebacker has been mentoring disadvantaged children in Washington, D.C., Buffalo, N.Y.,Charlotte, N.C. and in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, through an organization he founded called London's Brigade. The program provides children with educational field trips each month and promotes healthy living, leadership and also provides mentoring services to the youth online.

NFL players vote for who they believe should receive the award, which is named after NFL Hall-of-Fame QB and former coach Bart Starr. The Athletes in Action released a statement about why Fletcher was deserving of the award. Athletes in Action Communications

"In his 14th year in the NFL, Fletcher has been active in charitable projects across the country," the statement read. "He has been involved in the Redskins' Harvest Feast, the 'Stuff a Backpack' School Supply Drive, The Children's Inn and visits to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, among many other projects."

Fletcher will receive the award during the 25th Annual NFL Super Bowl Breakfast which will take place on Saturday at 8 a.m. He will also be joined by award other award finalists Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

In the past, the Bart Starr award has been given to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson, former NFL safety Darren Woodson, former NFL defensive end Reggie White and former NFL linebacker Mike Singletary.

This year's breakfast will take place at the Exposition Hall of the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
