In the first meeting, both teams were equally matched as both teams had their chances to win.

Eran Zehavi had an excellent game for Maccabi as he scored the game's first goal in the 31st minute.

However, it only took eight minutes before Basel struck back as a foul from the guests resulted in a penalty attempt that Matias Delgado calmly slotted in to tie the game.

And in the latter stages of the game, things began to turn up a level as Basel found the lead behind Breel Embolo's goal in the 88th minute – prompting the feeling that they were going to the second leg with an aggregate lead.

However, it was going to be undone by another Zehavi goal, six minutes into stoppage time to end the game 2-2 and giving Maccabi important away goals.

This perfectly sets up the second leg match and the Israel squad will have the fans cheering them on.

They will need the energy from the crowd as their current form is certainly below par. Maccabi have only won once in their last four matches across all competitions, while they face a team who is on a great streak.

FC Basel sit atop the Switzerland Super League and have not lost in their last 12 matches in all competitions, winning everything except their draw against Maccabi.
