It was also confirmed by Android Central. It is 238MB in size and will bring some the new features found on KitKat to the 2012 Nexus flagship. The device's successor, the Nexus 5 was the first smartphone to run Android 4.4.

The update can be accessed OTA (over-the-air). Google seemed to wait a few days after it rolled out the software to the Moto X in order to make sure there were no issues or bugs with it.

Android 4.4 KitKat debuted on the Nexus 5 and was created to be installed on all sorts of Google OS devices including those with low-end specifications.

"KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications," said Google on its developer's website.

The software is designed to protect system memory from apps consuming large amounts of RAM. Android will launch the services serially, or in small groups in order to avoid peak memory demands.

New features on the OS include enhancements such as restyled status and navigation bars, a new full-screen mode, color emoji support, improved closed captioning support, stronger security, and an improved phone app with the ability to look up contacts directly from the dial pad.

The camera will gain a touch to focus feature as well.

The Nexus 4 was released in 2012 and was one of the first handsets to run Android 4.2, JellyBean.
