The Need to Be Known

Before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. (Hebrews 4:13)

God knows you. In God's eyes the fine print of your life reads like a billboard. "Before him no creature is hidden. But all are open and laid bare . . ." To some people that must be an unnerving, frightening thought. But for the believer, there is much comfort in the thought that God knows us.

To be known, deeply and completely, is one of the persistent hungers of the human heart. This is something other people cannot give us. Even our best friends and members of our own families cannot fully know us. When we are praised, we secretly know that we are not as good as others think we are. And when we are condemned, we often feel misunderstood: "Now wait a minute! You've misjudged me. You don't know all the facts!" Of course they don't know all the facts. Nobody does.

Except God. Whatever the world thinks, whatever the world says, there is one who sees the whole, who knows the truth, whose judgment is unerring, and whose mercy is unfathomable. God knows us. "Lord, you have searched me and known me" (Ps. 139:1). What a sweet thought: God knows us completely, and yet loves us completely.
