'New Girl' Boss Talks 'Surprising' Season 5 Finale, 'New Dynamic' Between Jess and Nick in Season 6

"New Girl" aired its two much-anticipated Season 5 finale episodes on Tuesday night, finally giving its audience the Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) wedding it had been teasing since the beginning of the season. "New Girl" Season 5 ender also hinted at a potential future for another relationship in the popular Fox sitcom.

In "Wedding Eve" and "Landing Gear," Cece and Schmidt tied the knot, Coach (Damon Wayans, Jr.) returned for the wedding, Sam (David Walton) ended things with Jess while Nick and Reagan (Megan Fox) got back together. Jess and Sam's breakup led the former to realize that she still has feelings for Nick, paving the way for a possible reunion between the two in Season 6.

"New Girl" showrunner and creator Liz Meriwether spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the Season 5 finale and a possible reunion between Jess and Nick.

"We ended up in a cool place that also felt surprising of having Schmidt miss his own wedding," she said.

Meriwether also pointed out that Schmidt had grown since Season 1, evidenced by his reaction on his dilemma in the finale. Meriwether also recounted how she was initially opposed to the idea of Schmidt missing the wedding before realizing that it was an "amazing" thing for the character.

According to the "New Girl" boss, it gave the long-awaited wedding the needed drama and joy, different from the wedding trappings that the show had been dishing out throughout the season.

With regards to Jess and Nick, Meriwether said that, for her, the chemistry of the two is "the heart of the show."

"We're trying to figure out a way to reintroduce the dynamic but in a new way," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I think we're going back into that story area, but hopefully with growth for both characters and a new dynamic that will be still give us some tension between them."

The official air date for "New Girl" Season 6 has not been announced.
