Researchers: Jesus was Born in June

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

Christmas in Australia takes place each year at the height of summer.

But if it was celebrated on the day that some researchers allege Jesus Christ of Nazareth was actually born, Christmas would be white for those down under and hot for those elsewhere.

"December is an arbitrary date we have accepted but it doesn't really mean that is when it happened,” Australian astronomer Dave Reneke told media this week after his team of researchers used a computer program to pinpoint the date of Jesus’ birth.

According to the researchers, Jesus was born on June 17, 2 B.C. – the day that Venus and Jupiter became so close that they would have appeared to be one bright beacon of light.

"We are not saying this was definitely the Christmas star – but it is the strongest explanation for it of any I have seen so far,” Reneke told the London-based Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Previous theories have suggested that the star may have been a supernova, a comet, or the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in 7 B.C. Reneke, however, says the technology that his team utilized has provided the most compelling explanation yet.

"There's no other explanation that so closely matches the facts we have from the time,” said the former chief lecturer at the Port Macquarie Observatory in New South Wales.

Reneke was quick to point out, however, that his team’s claim is “not an attempt to decry religion.”

“It's really backing it up as it shows there really was a bright object appearing in the East at the right time,” he told the Telegraph.

"Often when we mix science with religion in this kind of forum, it can upset people. In this case, I think this could serve to reinforce people's faith," he added.

Currently, Reneke is the news editor of Sky and Space magazine and teaches astronomy at the college level. “Astro Dave,” as some have labeled him, is also a frequent guest on ABC Local, the local gateway of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

One reasons some give for the date of the 25th was to supplant and take the place of Saturnalia and Sol Invictus (Roman Holidays). This was also the time of Winter Solstice celebrations in other cultures... all the way back to Babylonian times. Pagan cultures had the story of the sun's birth happening at this time of year, because the Solstice is the longest night - after which the sun's light does lengthen. The influence of these ancient traditions can still be seen today in christian rituals. The history of it is very fascinating.

vse, many Bible scholars believe that the reason Dec. 25th became the day used to celebrate the birth of Christ was that it was a Roman pagan holiday already and early Christians rather than celebrate a pagan holiday decided rather to use that day to celebrate the birth of Christ and from that point it simply became a tradition for many in the Church.

Why did the Catholic Church pick Dec 25 to celebrate Jesus's birth. I can think of two reasons. 1. to make it easier to convert pagans. (which is obviously a good PR move) and 2 because Jesus is the LIGHT OF THE WORLD. What better way to symbolize this than by picking a date when the days begin to grow longer.

  • Fri Dec 12, 2008 7:01 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

Yes this article is true! Jesus was born in June. It is because even the Bible proves this! When Jesus was born Mary took Jesus to a place where horse's drink their water and she takes him their and baths him in the water and give him fresh dates to eat. NOW

FACT 1. How could Jesus be having a bath outside in December when it is freezing cold in Winter therefore it was Summer. Mary wouldn't bath him in water outside at Winter!

    FACT 2
She gave him fresh dates!!! DATES ONLY GROW IN SUMMER HOT DAYS !!! Another true fact.

THIS ALL PROVES JESUS WAS BORN IN SUMMER (JUNE)!!!

Like the television travel commercial says, "This is important research we are doing here"

Who is paying this group to spend time on this? Where can I sign up?

Pick any day of the year, including Halloween, and I'll be more than happy to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

Just don't take the observance away.

    Hello Indochristian
I may be wrong on this but I think the immaculate conception concerns the Roaman Catholic doctrine that Mary was conceived with out sin, somebody might like to correct me on that one.

oh good lord hat is wrong with you people? why are you acting like this is some sort of surprise? or course jesus of nazareth was born in june... some of you i am sure have read the bible on occasion.. pop quiz.. why were Joseph and Mary traveling in the first place? to pay their taxes.. and taxes were not collected in the dead of winter, they were collected in June... the entire december thing was done recently.. a few hundred years back in order to draw attention away from the pagan celebration of yule and the winter solstice. :)

  • Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:33 am Agree: 2   Disagree: 1

Due to the Immaculate Conception of Christ Jesus, the date of birth is unimportant. The most important date for a Christian is his Death and Ressurection, which we follow in the tradition of Baptism.

The vehemence with which they deny God's existence shows proves that they know He exists. Otherwise, why waste so much time and energy fighting against someone who does not exist? Do they fight against Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, tooth fairy? Certainly not. Atheism, Freedom From Religion Foundation and like organizations are all being spearheaded by someone who knows God exists. We know him as the father of lies, satan, the devil etc. He know that there will be a final battle between him and God. He knows already that he can't win and wants to take as many down with him as he can. We need to pray for these people. They are being used by the prince of darkness and are unaware of it. Whether they believe it or not, there will be a judgement day.

As a kid, we always had a manger scene set up near the tree. I'd notice the shepherds and the wise men gazing at the baby Jesus and would always wonder:
How long did they do this? For an hour? All night?
Did they just stay in one position or did they move around?
Did anyone speak or did they just stand there gazing at the baby Jesus?
How did they decide when to stop and go home?
    Who decided?

It seems odd that they would just stand there and stare. Mary was probably thinking, "Okay, THIS is getting uncomfortable. . . . "

It is possible that the Magi saw the Christmas star in 2 B.C. Many theologians accept the idea that it took them 18 months to 2 years to make the journey. Many also say that the Magi never saw Jesus in the manger, but that Jesus was 18 months to 2 years old when they presented their gifts. Does any of this really matter? Only if it refutes the Word of God...and it doesn't.

jester, I meant to tell you I wholeheartedly agree and the reality is without Good Friday and Easter, Christmas would be a moot point, let alone the actual date.

    my opinion on this subject?

who gives a flying leap? i celebrate his birthday everyday. only immaturish and shallow people argue over when he was born. like whether he was born in june or december has going to have any impact on the message of the Bible, or change the message of salvation, or change when we celebrate it.

Good one, Believer! I wish I'd thought of that.

But, seriously, did you all know that there was a tenth reindeer that no one knew about? His name was Olive.
Olive was a very naughty reindeer and caused all sorts of problems. For instance, he spread lies about Donner and Cupid, causing them to fight. He never let poor Rudolph play in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas eve, Blitzen fell through the ice and no one was around to rescue him except for Olive. So, with all his might, he pulled Blitzen out of the ice and Blitzen was able to help deliver gifts to all the good little boys and girls.
Suddenly, Olive saw that it felt good to be kind rather than naughty.
Ever since then, Olive did his good deed every Christmas by staying behind to take care of Mrs. Claus and the elfs.

(Then you get the little kids to sing "Rudolph")

    ". . . And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows;
OLIVE, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names. . .

    The kids love it.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

Thanks, chicago for the satire. I have an appriciation of such!

I was taught Jesus was born in June back when I was in middle school. One of my profs in Bible college said December 25th was picked basically because it was in the middle of a 'slow holiday period' of the year for the Catholic Church many hundreds of years ago and no other holiday fell on that day.

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:47 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

NO DUH HE WASN'T BORN IN DECEMBER!!!!

There isn't a single Christian alive who claims He was! We all know He was born in the summer and this has been common knowledge for forever. We celebrate Christmas in December because the Church saw celebrating Christ's birth as an opportunity to counter the pagan holidays surrounding December 25th. December 25th stuck for Christmas while the other holidays became a memory. Which was the whole point.

The Bible says that "...shepherds were watching their flocks by night... Shepherds don't do that in winter. So Jesus was most probably born during one of the other three seasons. I tend to believe around one of the Jewish fall festivals.

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 11:32 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

"The First Noel" traces back to the 17th or 18th century - perhaps as far back as the 13th, but not further than that. So the song may not be so accurate (not saying I agree with the researchers claim, but I just wanted to point that out).
